Lovely piece, Emily. I had no idea people were so down on Rome! Go figure. I've been 3 times and it's always enchanted me. Seems like any city, if you only hang around the landmarks, feels touristy, but Rome is big and there's so much to do. I'm glad you weren't turned off by all the bad reviews. Travel advice is tricky because one never knows if one has a similar POV to the person endorsing or shunning a destination. When we went to Spain for the first time, people raved about Barcelona and they were "meh" on Madrid, so we booked less time in Madrid and more time in Barcelona and I desperately wished it had been reversed. I loved Madrid! Barcelona was fine. I probably don't ever have to go back, but I will go back to Madrid for sure. Always love reading about your travels and adventures.
This is so true; I think anywhere can feel touristy if you only stick to the touristy spots. But, then, I also see the value in a lot of the touristy spots. Like, it would feel strange to go to Paris and avoid seeing the Eiffel Tower, right? I'm not sure whether I liked Madrid or Barcelona better. I have a hard time comparing cities because a lot of times they're so different that it feels like apples and oranges. Thank you for reading!
hahahahaha I love this. I kept trying to tell all my Italian friends that they should have Vespas, because they're Italian, but apparently they don't all have them??? Which seems wrong. Honestly, most Italians I met did like to say "mamma mia," though, which is extremely fun. I haven't seen "Emily in Paris," but for awhile I was telling people my name was Emily, "like Emily in Paris." But I wasn't actually not sure how likeable she is as a character or whether I should draw the comparison.
Right?! I must have been meeting the wrong Italians. That's exactly why I can't start watching. I know I won't stop. Well, I speak some Spanish and far less Italian, but I guess at least I'm trying haha.
